Permit By Lottery

There are two ways to obtain a permit

Online lottery

Forty-eight people or 12 groups (whichever comes first) each day are awarded permits through an online lottery four months in advance.

Online Daily Lottery

Sixteen people or four groups (whichever comes first) per day are awarded permits through a daily lottery. (Permits are acquired on the https://www.recreation.gov/mobile-app on a cell phone or a tablet. Permits must be applied for the Geofence area). You will be notified by email that evening if you won or not and must accept and pay for your permit by 7:00 A.M. the following morning. Visitors do not need to remain in the geofence area, as applicants will receive results directly on their mobile device (smartphone or tablet). If successful, visitors return to one of the permit offices to obtain permits, attend the mandatory safety briefing and prepare resources and logistics for this remote, wilderness hike. You will be given a detailed map and a safety orientation after you receive your permit. Orientation starts at 8:30 AM (AZ Time) (For Daily Lottery Winners permits must be picked up by 8:30 AM if you are late permits will be voided and you will need to reapply). Winners may also hire a local guide. A list of permitted guides is provided at the time of receiving your permit.

Where do I access the geofence area to apply for daily permits? What towns or locations are within the geofence area?

BLM collaborated with the City of Page, Coconino County Arizona, Kanab City and Kane County Utah regarding the geofence boundary. The geofence area includes the following towns or communities in Arizona: Page, Greenhaven, Marble Canyon, Vermilion Cliffs, AZ, Jacob Lake, White Sage, Fredonia, Moccasin, and the Kaibab Paiute Indian Reservation. The towns or communities in Utah are: Big Water, Paria, Johnson Canyon, Kanab, Mt. Carmel, Orderville, Glendale and East Zion. See Map Below.

General Frequently Asked Questions

No more than six people per group. If you exceed this limit, you may be cited. Joining people on a separate permit to exceed six people is prohibited. Everyone, regardless of age, must be included on the permit. This includes infants that are not walking.

Dogs do not count toward the group limit, but there is a charge for dogs

There will be no changes or modifications allowed to permit dates, applicant name, alternate permit holders and group size following the application process. The only way to modify these details is to cancel the first application and submit a new one, which will require an additional payment of the $9 application fee. Once the lottery has run, no changes can be made.

If the primary permit holder cannot make the trip on the permit date, the permit can only be used by the alternate permit holders listed on the application. If a primary or alternate permit holder is not present, the permit is invalid.
