THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO OBTAIN PERMIT:
Lottery Schedule for Daily
Day 1 – Application
Apply on recreation. gov between 6 AM and 6 PM two days ahead of the desired entry date. Lottery results are sent out at 7:15 PM this evening. Window opens to accept winning lottery.
Day 2 – Safety Briefing
Successful applicants must accept the permit and pay fees by 8 AM Utah time and be onsite at a permit pickup location at 9:00 AM local time for a safety briefing. Local time may be different between pick-up locations. During Daylight Savings, 9:00 in Utah is 8:00 in Arizona
Day 3 – Permit date
Permit-holders have the day to explore Coyote Buttes South.
10 people or 4 groups (whichever comes first) are awarded through this Daily Lottery.
Applications can only be submitted via a mobile device (ex. smart phone, internet-connected tablet) through the Recreation.gov mobile app or a browser.
Online lottery
For example, permits for the month of August would become available on May 1st at 12:00 noon MDT
10 people or 4 groups (whichever comes first) are awarded through the Coyote Buttes South advance permit calendar, a separate process from this geofence Daily Lottery.
The maximum group size is 6 people.
Everyone, regardless of age, must be included in the permit. This includes infants that are not walking. Dogs do not need to be included.
Four-wheel drive, high-clearance vehicle is required for Cottonwood Cove & Paw Hole Trailheads. The roads accessing these trailheads are composed of deep sand with sections of rough rock.
Fees: A non-refundable $9.00 fee is required to apply.
Permit holders should be in good physical condition and have good backcountry hiking and navigation skills.
Late or no shows to the in-person orientation, result in a cancelation of permits.
This remote area offers opportunity for solitude where you will very likely see no one or have only occasional contact with other visitors.
To help protect yourself and the wilderness experience, please take the following precautions:
If you lack an appropriate vehicle or an experienced driver, consider renting a four-wheel-drive high-clearance vehicle or hiring an authorized guide.
Lone Tree is the only trailhead that may be accessible with a two-wheel drive, high-clearance vehicle when road conditions are good. However, accessing the permit area using this option adds an additional 5-mile round trip hike through deep sand.
Check weather forecasts.
Tell a responsible person your itinerary and whom to contact if you are overdue.
Carry at least a gallon of water per person including your dog.
You are responsible for your safety.
Area does not contain any trails or facilities.
